Acceptances

Professor Matthew Eshbaugh-Soha's Presidential Success on the Substance of Legislation” has been accepted for publication in Political Research Quarterly, forthcoming in 2007(with Andrew Barrett).

Professor Michael Greig's paper, "Softening Up: Making Conflicts More Amenable for Diplomacy" (co-authored with Paul Diehl) has been accepted for publication as part of a special issue on international conflict management in International Interactions

Professor James Meernik's “The Evolving Application of International Law: Insights from the Appeals Chamber of the Ad Hoc International Tribunals” was accepted for publication in the International Criminal Law Review.

Professor Idean Salehyan's article "Ruthless Rulers: Coalition Size and the Severity of Civil Conflict", co-authored with Lindsay Heger was accepted for publication in International Studies Quarterly.

Prof. Wendy Watson, McKinzie Craig, and Daniel Orion Davis's "Federal Court Certification of State Law Questions: Active Judicial Federalism," will appear soon in The Justice System Journal.

Articles Published

Professor John Booth's "Os contornos da cidadanía crítica: Explorando a legitimidade democrática" (The Contours of Critical Citizenship: Exploring Democratic Legitimacy.) co-authored with Mitchell A. Seligson and Miguel Gómez B. was published in, Opinião Pública (Brazil) 12::1 (May 2006).

Professor John Booth and Patti Richard's article "Revolution’s Legacy: Residual Effects on Nicaraguan Participation and Attitudes in Comparative Context,” was published in Latin American Politics and Society 48 (summer 2006): 117-140.

Professor Ko Maeda's invited article The General Election in Japan, September 2005" appeared in the September 2006 edition of Electoral Studies.

Events

Constitution Day 

The Political Science Department helped to host Constitution Day on September 18, 2006 with a panel discussion on presidential powers and the detainment of combatants at Guantanamo Bay, and with a signing/not signing of the Constitution.

Christine Harper successfully defended her Master's Thesis, "Determining Capacity: The Impact of IMF Lending on State Capacity in Developing Countries" on Friday, September 29.

Professor Michael Greig presented "Who Mediates? An Analysis of the Acceptance of Offers to Mediate in Civil Wars" with Pat Regan.

Professor Steve Forde presented "The Charitable John Locke." He also served as discussant on a panel on Benjamin Franklin--the only Franklin panel at an APSA meeting held in Philadelphia on the 300th anniversary of Franklin's birth.

 

Professor Ko Maeda presented "The Changing Nature of Candidate Recruitment in Japan and its Effects on Japanese Party Politics".

Professor Elizabeth Oldmixon presented “When Church Teachings and Republican Ideology Collide: The Perspective of Catholic Republicans in the House of Representatives”.

Professor John Booth presented "Electoral Participation in Honduras in Regional Comparative Perspective" at the International Meeting on Latin American Electoral Processes in Madrid, Spain on May 30, 2006, and presented "'Maculate' Conception: The Development of Costa Rican Democracy," at a conference on Deviant Democracies at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands on September 30, 2006.

Professor John Booth was a presenter, on the 2005 Honduran National Election and Electoral Participation in Honduras, Roundtable on Central American Elections, Casa de las Américas and the Interuniversity Institute for Iberoamerica of the University of Salamanca, Madrid, June 1, 2006. 

Professor James Meernik and Professor Seonjou Kang presented “Civil War and the Prospects for Economic Growth” at the Folke Bernadotte Academy, Stockholm Sweden, June 13, 2006.

Members of the Political Science Department met with faculty and administrators of the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico, September 17-19, 2006 to promote faculty and student exchanges.
