Acceptances

Prof. John Booth and Prof. Mitchell Seligson's (Vanderbilt University), "Political Legitimacy and Participation in Costa Rica: Evidence of Arena Shopping" was accepted for publication at Political Research Quarterly.

Prof. Andrew Enterline and Prof. Michael Greig's, "“Beacons of Hope? The Impact of Imposed Democracy on Regional Peace, Democracy and Prosperity” was accepted for publication in the Journal of Politics.

Prof. Michael Greig and Prof. Paul Diehl's (University of Illinois), "The Peacekeeping-Peacebuilding Dilemma" was accepted for publication in International Studies Quarterly.

Prof. Dave Mason and Prof. James Meernik have signed a book contract with Routledge for an edited volume, Sustaining the Peace: War Prevention and Peacebuilding in Post Conflict Societies. The book includes chapters written by PSCI faculty and presentations made at our last two conferences, "After the Storm:  Reconstructing States, Reconciling Societies" and "Post War Reconstruction and Democratization"..

Prof. James Meernik's, “Foreign Policy Orientation, Strategic Interaction and the Initiation of International Crises” was accepted for publication in Foreign Policy Analysis.

Prof. Peter Vondoepp's "Party Cohesion and Fractionalization in New African Democracies: Lessons from Struggles Over Third Term Amendments." was accepted for publication in Studies in Comparative International Development.

Grants

Prof. Phil Paolino and Prof. James Meernik were awarded a $20,000 grant by the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy to hold a conference on "Emerging Democracies and Democratic Values: The Experiences of Taiwan and East Asia".

Appearances

 The UNT Moot Court team, coached by Prof. Kimi King, is ranked 3rd in the country after their most recent national tournament. They were the only Texas team to advance to the playoffs, beating out A&M, UT-Austin, UT-D & UT-A. One UNT team lost in the semi-finals to the team that went on to win the tournament. UNT won three  top speaker awards - Daniel Davis, 3rd place; Kinsie Craig 7th place;, and Jennifer Poole, 8th place. All PSCI teams that represented UNT in the medal rounds were Josh Yaklin /Michelle Lee 3rd overall (semi-finalists);  Jennifer Poole & Joe Rivera - Sweet 16 finalists, Rebecca Cormier & Chris Taylor - quarter-finalists.

Prof. Richard Ruderman participated in a Roundtable at the Southern Political Science Conference on "Religion and Politics in Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil"; Jan. 8, 2005, New Orleans.

Events

The Right Honorable Bruce George will speak at 8 pm on February 14 in the Lyceum on "Iraq Before and After the Election".  George is chair of the Defence Committee in the British House of Commons, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and has served as an election observer in many countries.

 On Wednesday, February 16, at 3:30 pm Professor Mab Hawang of the Department of Political Science at Soochow University in Taipei, Taiwan gives a research presentation to faculty and graduate students:Radical Evil and Transitional JusticeKant, Arendt and Nino" in WH 214.

On Thursday, February 17 at 3:30 Professor Shiow-duan Hawang of the Department of Political Science at Soochow University in Taipei, Taiwan gives a research presentation to faculty and graduate students: “The Relationships between the Executive Branch and Legislative Branch in Taiwan: A Comparison of the Unified and Divided Governments” in WH 214.
