Acceptances Professor Mathieu Turgeon's "`Just Thinking:' Attitude Development, Public Opinion, and Political Representation" was accepted for publication in Political Behavior. Professor John Ishiyama, Professor Marijke Breuning, and Kathryn Sanders' (former Truman State University Undergraduate Student ) “Foreign Aid and Democratization in Post-conflict Societies” was accepted for publication in the Midsouth Political Science Review. Professor Ko Maeda's "Divided We Fall: Opposition Fragmentation and the Electoral Fortunes of Governing Parties" has been accepted for publication in the British Journal of Political Science. Professor Lisa Solowiej and Professor Paul Collins's "Counteractive Lobbying in the U.S. Supreme Court" was accepted for publication in American Politics Research. Grants
Professor John Ishiyama received a UNT Research Infrastructure Grant of
$16,600.00 to establish (in conjunction with the UNT McNair Program) a
computer lab dedicated to machine coded text analysis. Recognition Erum Shaikh has been awarded the Clinton Global Initiative Award for her outstanding commitment to improve communities around the world. The UNT Mediation Team, coached by PSCI Professor Barbara Kirby, received the "New Team" Trophy at in its first participation at the National Mediation Tournament at John Marshall Law School in Chicago. The Moot Court Team The University of North Texas Moot Court Squad, coached by PSCI Professor Kimi King, qualified two of its teams for nationals. The team also won the Texas Tech Tournament for the fifth time and the Texas Wesleyan Tournament. The Moot Court Team also attended a lecture by associate Justice Antonin Scalia hosted by Texas Tech School of Law. The Moot Court Squad advanced three teams at the Southwestern Regional Tournament. Rodney Bernal, junior political science student, and Laura Lewis, senior political science student reached the round of 16. A second UNT team of Emily Ownby, senior political science student, and Allie Hallmark, senior political science student, reached the quarterfinals. They defeated another team of UNT students, Bekah Kopsky, senior political science student, and Shelby Henderson, freshman student of political science. The UNT Moot Court Team of Emily Ownby and Allie Hallmark eventually won the Texas Tech Tournament. Appearances Professor Richard Ruderman presented "Homer's Narrative on Death" at the Northeast Political Science Association convention, Boston, November 13-15. Professor Richard Ruderman also served as a discussant on a roundtable about Robert Faulkner's "The Case for Greatness." Professor Marijke Breuning presented the "Role Theory in International Relations: Connecting Identity and Action." at the Annual Meeting of the International Studies Association/Midwest, November 7-9, St. Louis, MO.
Professor John Ishiyama and Anna Pechenina (Truman State
University undergraduate student) presented “Environmental
Degradation and Genocide/Politicide, 1958-2007” at the Annual Meeting
of the International Studies Association-Midwest, St. Louis, November
7-9. Professor John Ishiyama also gave a talk on “Asian
Americans and the 2008 Elections” at the UNT 4th Annual Asian Pacific
American Empowerment Conference (APAEC) November 15, 2008.
