Bachelor of Arts Degree

Requirements and Typical Program for Majors
Requirements effective Fall, 1995

CORE CURRICULUM

As a major in one of the departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, you must complete the core curriculum requirements in order to graduate. There is no requirement that you do so before the start of your junior year. However, you should complete the required four semesters in English by the end of your sophomore year (60 hours) . A checklist of the core requirements is available from the undergraduate adviser's office in the Department of Political Science, or you may click here for more information about the core requirements.

MAJOR

The Political Science major requires completion of 30 semester hours in Political Science. In addition to the two state-mandated courses (PSCI 1040 and 1050, or their equivalents), you must complete PSCI 2300 (3 credits - if taken before Fall, 1996 for 3 credits, then PSCI 3300 is required also). We also require one course from Field C, although PSCI 3300 may not be taken to fulfill the Field C requirement), and 21 more semester hours (normally 7 courses) in Political Science. Four three-hour courses (12 hours) must be distributed so that you take at least one course in 3 of the following 6 fields, not counting the Field C required course. The other courses required to complete the major may be distributed as you wish. The fields to which Special Problems (PSCI 4900, 4910) and Practicum (PSCI 3910) courses apply will be determined according to their content.

Field A. American Government and Politics
2100, 3010, 3100*, 3110, 3130, 3160, 3420**, 4020, 4100, 4120, 4140, 4450**

Field B. Public Law and Judicial Politics
3200, 3210, 4200, 4210, 4220, 4810**

Field C. Theory and Methodology

Field D. Public Policy

Field E. Comparative Government and Politics
3600, 3700*, 4620, 4630, 4640, 4650, 4660, 4700*, 4710, 4720

Field F. International Politics
3500, 3810, 4520, 4800, 4810**, 4820*, 4830, 4840, 4850, 4860

* May be taken for credit multiple times, depending on course title.

** Appears in two fields, but may be applied to only one.

MINOR

A minor is optional, and should be declared when filing a degree plan. If you choose one, it will have a minimum of 18 hours (more for selected departments - consult the catalog or see the PSCI Undergraduate Adviser or consult the Adviser's bulletin board). At least 6 hours must be upper-division (3000 or 4000 level). In order to fulfill the 42 advanced hour requirement, it is wise to consider 12 advanced hours in your minor.

DEGREE PLAN

A degree plan, which is essentially a checklist of all major, minor and core curriculum requirements, should be prepared in consultation with your adviser if you are a transfer student or when you have completed 60 hours. It is your responsibility to ensure that the plan is prepared. In order to get one, first go to the Registrar and ask that all of your transcripts, from UNT and elsewhere, be sent to the Undergraduate Adviser in Political Science. There is no charge for this. Then wait about a week and see your adviser. If you have done all of your work at UNT, there is no need to have the Registrar send your transcripts.
