 Research interests: comparative political behavior and culture, democratization, political violence/revolution, Latin American politics. Coauthor of Legitimacy Puzzle in Latin America: Political Support and Democracy in Eight Nations (forthcoming 2009) and Understanding Central America : Global Forces, Rebellion, and Change (5th revised ed. forthcoming 2009). Author of Costa Rica: Quest for Democracy and The End and the Beginning: The Nicaraguan Revolution. Coeditor/contributor to Elections and Democracy in Central America and Elections and Democracy in Central America Revisited, Political Participation in Latin America (2 vols.) and The Politics of San Antonio: Community, Power, and Progress. Author/coauthor of articles in American Journal of Political Science, European Journal of Political Research, Democratization, Journal of Politics, Political Research Quarterly, Latin American Research Review, Latin American Politics and Society, American Behavioral Scientist, Comparative Political Studies and others. Consultant for U.S. government and international agencies, interest groups, professional associations, foundations, and corporations. Fulbright Lecturer in Costa Rica, 1979-80. Latin American Studies Association XVII International Congress program chair. Chair of the UNT Political Science Department 1986-90.
